Candle making with natural wax // Snowflake candles - Tutorial

Today we will show and explain how you can easily make your own snowflake candles at home. We are using our rapeseed coconut wax 660-55M, which is a 100% pure natural wax.

Have everything you need for making your candles ready:

You will also need:

  • Water bath / simmer pot
  • Thermometer
  • Something to stir with
  • (Precision) scales
  • Candle moulds (we use these silicone moulds)
  • Wick holder
  • Sewing needle

1. Melting

First, melt the rapeseed coconut wax in a water bath or simmer pot. Heat the wax to 60 to max. 80°C. Stir regularly and slowly while melting. Make sure not to heat the wax too quickly or too hot. Also, make sure that no water gets into the liquid wax!

While the wax is melting, you can preheat the moulds on a radiator and prepare the wicks.

2. Preparing the wicks

Cut the BWR wick from the spool and make sure to pay attention to the direction of the wick! We tie a knot at the bottom/back end of the wick so that we can still identify the direction later. This is important so that the candle can burn properly. You can also read more about our wicks here.

To pre-wax the wicks, simply dip the cut pieces into the liquid wax until no more air bubbles are visible. Then place the wick straight and wait briefly until it is dry.

3. Preparing the moulds

Once the wicks are dry, you can prepare the moulds.

To do this, carefully pierce the wick through the silicone mould using the sewing needle. To prevent any wax from leaking out, you can seal the wick opening from the outside with our wax adhesive tabs.

Until pouring, you can place the moulds back on a radiator to continue preheating them.

4. Pouring

Slowly reduce the temperature to approx. 60-65°C. It is best to use a thermometer to check. The surroundings and moulds should not be too cold and the wax should not be too hot.

Do not pour the wax too quickly. Air bubbles can easily be removed by gently tapping the mould on the surface from time to time. To stabilise the wicks while cooling, centre them with a wick holder (you can also use a fork, toothpick, bobby pin, etc.).

5. Hardening & removing from the mould

Ideally, allow the candles to harden for 12 hours at room temperature. The best option is on a cooling rack with enough space between each candle. Once the candles are completely cooled, carefully remove them from the mould. You can smooth the bottom of the candle with a soap planer.

6. Giving as a gift or lighting

These homemade winter candles are a wonderful way to make someone happy, or you can light them and enjoy them yourself. They also look beautiful as decoration if you do not want to burn them! (:
