Our Rapeseed Wax 5761 is perfect for pouring freestanding candles. It is the most commonly used wax for bubble candles & similar creative candle shapes. Here we explain how to make candles with our Rapeseed Wax 5761.
First, make sure to cover your workspace with a towel or something similar. Prepare everything you need for a water bath, as well as the rapeseed wax, wicks and preheated silicone moulds, and you are ready to go. You can easily preheat the moulds by placing them on a radiator while the wax is melting.
We recommend starting with a small amount first - practice makes perfect!
1. Melting
Heat the wax to 75 to max. 85°C. Stir regularly and slowly while melting. A water bath works best for this. Make sure not to melt the wax too quickly or at too high a temperature.
2. Adding fragrance
If desired, fully dissolve the colour (0.1-0.2%) or fragrance (max. 6%) into the liquid wax at approx. 80°C and stir carefully. Important: Always colour the wax first before adding fragrance. When colouring, some experimentation may be necessary to achieve the desired colour result. The colour becomes less intense as the wax cools. Our wax colours are also perfect for mixing!
Attention: Some ingredients in fragrance oils can react with the crystallisation of natural waxes.
3. Pouring
Slowly reduce the temperature to approx. 60-65°C. It is best to use a thermometer to check. The surroundings and containers should not be too cold and the wax should not be too hot. Pierce the wicks through the mould using a sewing needle. Do not pour the wax too quickly. Air bubbles can easily be removed by gently tapping the mould on the surface from time to time. To stabilise the wicks while cooling, place a fork over the mould to support the wick (or use a wick holder).
4. Topping up
If small cracks or uneven areas appear, simply pour a thin additional layer of wax after the candle has hardened slightly.
5. Hardening
Allow the candles to harden for around 12 hours at room temperature. The best option is to place them on a cooling rack with enough space between each candle. Rapeseed wax candles are often already hardened after a few hours, unlike paraffin candles. Nevertheless, we recommend waiting a little longer. You can smooth the bottom of the candle with a soap planer.
6. Giving as a gift or lighting
Your homemade candles are a wonderful way to make someone happy, or you can light them and enjoy them yourself. If you used fragrance and have leftover wax, you can easily make wax melts from it - simply pour the remaining wax into small moulds (e.g. chocolate moulds).
