In our first YouTube tutorial, we show you how to make beautiful Christmas candles yourself using our products. Here you can find the written tutorial:
First, make sure to cover your workspace with a towel or similar. Have everything you need for making your candles ready:
- Rapeseed wax 5761
- BWR wick (we use the BWR 4 on a spool)
- Wax colour (we use our new colours Fir Green, Brown and Berry)
- Fragrance (we use Vanilla Nuts)
You will also need:
- Water bath / simmer pot
- Thermometer
- Something to stir with
- (Precision) scales
- Candle moulds (we use hard plastic moulds in the video, but you can also use silicone moulds)
1. Melting
First, melt the rapeseed wax in a water bath or simmer pot. Heat the wax to 75 to max. 85°C. Stir regularly and slowly while melting. Make sure not to heat the wax too quickly or too hot. Also, make sure that no water gets into the liquid wax!
2. Preparing the wicks
While the wax is melting, you can prepare the wicks. Cut the BWR wick from the spool and make sure to pay attention to the direction of the wick! We tie a knot at the bottom/back end of the wick so that we can still identify the direction later. This is important so that the candle can burn properly. You can read more about our wicks here.
To pre-wax the wicks, simply dip the cut pieces into the liquid wax until no more air bubbles are visible. Then place the wick straight and wait briefly until it is dry.
3. Preparing the moulds
Once the wicks are dry, you can prepare the moulds. If you use hard plastic moulds like we do in our video, place the wick in the centre and secure the mould halves tightly with rubber bands. If the rubber bands are too loose, the wax may leak out of the mould later. To prevent this at the wick opening, you can seal it with our wax adhesive tabs.
If you use a silicone mould, simply pierce the wick through the mould using a sewing needle.
Until pouring, you can place the moulds on a radiator to preheat them.
4. Adding colour
For colouring, we used our new wax colours and weighed out the recommended addition of 0.3%.
We made three different candles, so we coloured the wax in separate containers. It is important to make sure that the wax has a temperature of approx. 80°C so that the colour can dissolve completely. If the wax in the separate container is too cold, simply put it back in the microwave briefly and stir until completely mixed.
4.1. Adding fragrance
If you would like to add fragrance to your candle, always colour the wax first and then fully stir your chosen fragrance (max. 6%) into the liquid wax at approx. 80°C (for approx. 3 minutes). We used our Vanilla Nuts fragrance for our reindeer candle.
Important: Always colour the wax first before adding fragrance. When colouring, some experimentation may be necessary to achieve the desired colour result. The colour becomes less intense as the wax cools.
Attention: Some ingredients in fragrance oils can react with the crystallisation of natural waxes.
5. Pouring
Slowly reduce the temperature to approx. 60-65°C. It is best to use a thermometer to check. The surroundings and moulds should not be too cold and the wax should not be too hot.
Do not pour the wax too quickly. Air bubbles can easily be removed by gently tapping the mould on the surface from time to time. To stabilise the wicks while cooling, centre them with a wick holder (you can also use a fork, toothpick, bobby pin, etc.).
6. Topping up
If small cracks or uneven areas appear, simply pour a thin additional layer of wax after the candle has hardened slightly.
7. Hardening
Ideally, allow the candles to harden for 12 hours at room temperature. The best option is on a cooling rack with enough space between each candle. Rapeseed wax candles are usually already hardened after a few hours, unlike paraffin candles. Nevertheless, we recommend waiting a little longer.
8. Removing from the mould
Once the candles are completely cooled, carefully remove them from the mould. You can smooth the bottom of the candle with a soap planer.
9. Giving as a gift or lighting
These homemade Christmas candles are a wonderful way to make someone happy, or you can light them and enjoy them yourself. They also look beautiful as decoration if you do not want to burn them! (:
If you used fragrance and have some wax left over, you can easily make wax melts from it - simply pour the remaining wax into small moulds (e.g. chocolate moulds).
