Ice cream scoop candles in a jar made from soy wax - Tutorial

Here you can learn how to make beautiful ice cream scoop candles from soy wax yourself. You can optionally colour them and/or use fragrance. We decided on a mango and a mint dessert candle.

Important! "The Directive on dangerous imitations prohibits the manufacture, import and placing on the market of non-food products that look like food." This also includes candles. However, you are allowed to make them for private use. More information can be found here.

What you need:

Also: water bath, hot air gun, needle, transparent/frosted candle jar

1. Melting

Heat the soy wax C3 to a temperature of 70 to max. 90 °C. Stir regularly while melting, but do not stir too vigorously or quickly. The best way to do this is in a water bath. While the wax is melting, fix the wick using wax adhesive tabs and centre it with a wick holder.

2. Add colour and/or fragrance

If desired, fully melt and mix the colour (0.1 - 0.2%) or the fragrance (max. 6%) into the liquid wax at approx. 80°C. Important: Always colour the wax first before adding fragrance. When colouring, a little experimentation is needed to achieve the desired colour result. The colour becomes less intense as the wax cools. Our wax colours are also very suitable for mixing! We used our yellow candle dye with our Mango Blossom fragrance and our green colour with the fragrance Liptus Mint.

3. Pour the base

Allow the wax to cool down to approx. 50°C and meanwhile preheat the jars (e.g. with a hot air gun or simply on the radiator). Then slowly pour the soy wax into the jars until they are approx. 3/4 full (depending on which jars you use).

4. Prepare the ice cream scoops

Melt soy wax as before. Pour the liquid wax into a mixing bowl. While it cools, keep stirring vigorously with the whisk/mixer. Over time, it will develop a whitish consistency. Whip the wax (as if you were whipping cream by hand). The aim is to mix as much air as possible into the wax.

5. Shape the ice cream scoops

Once the wax mixture has reached the right consistency, shape scoops using an ice cream scoop. The correct consistency is reached when the wax peak remains stable/stands upright when you remove the whisk and turn it upside down (again similar to cream, but slightly firmer). Place the wax scoops on a silicone mat or baking paper to harden. The bowl & scoop can be cleaned with a hot air gun and kitchen paper. Before coming into contact with food again, please clean them thoroughly (preferably in the dishwasher).

6. Assemble the candle

Once the wax in the jar and the ice cream scoops have cooled, you can assemble the candle. To do this, carefully pierce a hole through the ice cream scoop using a hot needle. Then melt the surface of the glass candle with a hot air gun, thread the scoop onto the wick and press it firmly into place. You can melt a little more of the surface so that the ice cream scoop sinks slightly into the coloured wax.

7. Give as a gift or light it

These homemade candles are a wonderful way to easily make someone happy, or you can light them yourself and enjoy them.
