What is citric acid?
Citric acid is an organic acid that occurs naturally in citrus fruits and is usually produced industrially through fermentation. It is used in a wide range of applications in the food industry, cosmetic products and cleaning agents.
What do anhydrous and monohydrate mean?
The difference lies in the water content. Citric acid monohydrate contains crystal water, whereas citric acid anhydrous is virtually water-free. The anhydrous form is particularly suitable for dry blends and moisture-sensitive formulations, while monohydrate is often used in applications involving liquids.
Food-grade citric acid (E 330)
Food-grade citric acid, also known as E 330, is used as an acidifier, acidity regulator and for rounding off flavour. It can be found in drinks, sweets, preserves, dairy products and many other foods.
It is used, among other things, in:
- Drinks such as soft drinks, iced tea, lemonade and instant tea.
- Sweets such as sour drops, wine gums and lollies.
- Preserves, jams and jellies.
- Dairy products, delicatessen foods and meat products.
Citric acid in cosmetics (Citric Acid)
In cosmetics, citric acid is known under the INCI name Citric Acid and is primarily used as a pH regulator and chelating agent. At higher concentrations, it can also have an exfoliating function as an AHA active ingredient in peels and toners.
Suitable for:
- Face creams and lotions for pH stabilisation.
- Peels and toners for formulation-specific fruit acid applications.
- Shampoos and shower gels to adjust acidity.
- Bath additives and nail care products.
Citric acid as a cleaner
Citric acid is a proven descaler for removing limescale deposits and mineral residues. It is often used for kettles, coffee machines, dishwashers, taps, as well as tiles, sinks and shower walls.
