What are candle jars?

Candle jars are heat-resistant glass containers used for pouring candles or as holders for finished candles and tealights. They protect against drafts, prevent hot wax from leaking and showcase candles as decorative accents.

Our candle jars

Our standard candle jars are available in 200 ml and 300 ml sizes. Choose from transparent, white, brown and black options in either glossy or matt finishes. Matching bamboo lids complete the range and make the jars perfect for personalised branding.

The jars are specifically designed for candle making and are made from genuine, thick-walled glass. This ensures good heat resistance and high day-to-day durability.

FAQ

Can you pour a candle into any jar?

No. Only heat-resistant glass should be used, for example thick-walled candle jars or preserving (Weck) jars. Ordinary glass can crack or even shatter from the heat. It is also important that the jar is suitable for the candle’s size and burning behaviour.

Why is my candle sooty in the jar?

Soot is often caused by drafts, a wick that is too long, or an unfavourable jar shape. Trim the wick to about 0.5 cm, up to a maximum of 1 cm, before lighting. If the jar rim is too high, the flame may receive too little oxygen, which also promotes soot.

How do I avoid the “tunnelling” effect?

To avoid tunnelling, let the candle burn on the first light until the entire surface has melted and formed a full wax pool. This ensures the wax burns evenly to the edge. Also trim the wick before each lighting to prevent an excessively large flame.

What does “drowning” of the flame mean?

“Drowning” occurs when the flame is smothered by the liquid wax and goes out due to insufficient oxygen. This often happens if the wick is too short or the melt pool forms poorly. An incorrectly sized wick can also make the flame unstable.

How do I clean empty candle jars?

The easiest method is to place the jar in hot water until the remaining wax softens or melts, then wipe it out with a kitchen paper towel and wash with dish soap. Never pour hot or liquid wax down the sink, as it can harden and cause blockages.

How much candle wax do I need for my jar?

Fill the empty container with water to the desired fill height and weigh the water. Multiply the water weight by 0.9 to estimate the required wax amount. For fragranced candles, subtract a further 5–10% of that weight for the fragrance oil. It’s wise to buy or melt an extra 10–15% of wax to allow for losses and adjustments.

Which wick should I use for the 200 ml and 300 ml jars?

For natural waxes such as soy, we recommend BWR 7 for 200 ml and BWR 9 for 300 ml. For paraffin, we recommend STG 69 for 200 ml and STG 75 for 300 ml. Please note these recommendations apply only to our jars and should be tested with your specific wax, fragrance and colour additives.

Can I reuse candle jars?

Yes. Thoroughly cleaned jars are excellent for reuse — for new DIY candles, as storage jars, or for decorative purposes around the home.

Can candle jars be used as drinking glasses?

Yes. After a thorough cleaning, a retired candle jar can be repurposed as a drinking glass. They also work well as storage containers in the kitchen or bathroom or as small plant pots; their simple design often looks attractive even outside candle-making.
