What is paraffin?
Paraffin is a mixture of saturated hydrocarbons derived from petroleum. It is low-odour, tasteless, water-repellent and highly versatile. Paraffin is used especially often in candle making, cosmetic products and technical applications.
Paraffin for candles
A large proportion of the paraffin used worldwide is processed into candles. Depending on the application, different melting points and delivery forms such as pastilles, granules or blocks are suitable. Paraffin wax is particularly popular for moulded candles, dipped candles and numerous industrial candle products.
Paraffin for cosmetics
In cosmetics, paraffin is often used as a moisture barrier, consistency agent and skin-protecting ingredient. It forms a gentle protective film on the skin, helps prevent moisture loss and leaves the skin feeling smooth. Paraffin is a tried-and-tested raw material for nourishing formulations, especially in creams, lotions, lip care products and ointments.
Petroleum jelly
Petroleum jelly, also referred to in cosmetics as Vaseline or Petrolatum (INCI), is a colourless and odourless semi-solid hydrocarbon mixture based on mineral oil. It is used in cosmetics as a base for ointments and creams and is also popular as a protective and conditioning ingredient. It is particularly valued for its smoothing and emollient properties.

Paraffin oils
Paraffin oil, also known as white oil, is the liquid form of paraffin. It is a highly refined, colourless and odourless oil used in different grades of purity and for various applications depending on its viscosity. In cosmetics, it is listed as Paraffinum Liquidum and is used primarily in skincare products, ointments and skin-protection formulations.
Fischer-Tropsch wax (FT wax)
Microcrystalline wax
Microcrystalline wax is a speciality wax with a very fine crystal structure. Compared with classic paraffin, it is tougher, more flexible and more adhesive, which is why it is mainly used as an additive in various formulations. Typical applications include cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, food products, candles and industrial products.
Paraffin embedding medium
Paraffin embedding medium is a highly refined speciality wax for histology and pathology. It is used to stabilise tissue samples and prepare them for thin microtome sections. This makes it an essential raw material for microscopic diagnostics.
