To the product overview

What is paraffin?

Paraffin is a mixture of saturated hydrocarbons derived from petroleum. It is low-odour, tasteless, water-repellent and highly versatile. Paraffin is used especially often in candle making, cosmetic products and technical applications.

Paraffin for candles

A large proportion of the paraffin used worldwide is processed into candles. Depending on the application, different melting points and delivery forms such as pastilles, granules or blocks are suitable. Paraffin wax is particularly popular for moulded candles, dipped candles and numerous industrial candle products.

Paraffin for cosmetics

In cosmetics, paraffin is often used as a moisture barrier, consistency agent and skin-protecting ingredient. It forms a gentle protective film on the skin, helps prevent moisture loss and leaves the skin feeling smooth. Paraffin is a tried-and-tested raw material for nourishing formulations, especially in creams, lotions, lip care products and ointments.

Paraffin in pastilles

Paraffin pastilles are particularly easy to dose and quick to process. They are ideal for small to medium production volumes and for applications where precise filling is important. However, due to their fine form, they can block together more easily at certain melting points than other delivery forms.

Paraffin in blocks

Paraffin blocks are particularly suitable for larger processing volumes. Their compact form makes them efficient to store, stack and transport. This makes them especially economical for industrial applications and larger production facilities.

Petroleum jelly

Petroleum jelly, also referred to in cosmetics as Vaseline or Petrolatum (INCI), is a colourless and odourless semi-solid hydrocarbon mixture based on mineral oil. It is used in cosmetics as a base for ointments and creams and is also popular as a protective and conditioning ingredient. It is particularly valued for its smoothing and emollient properties.

Paraffin oils

Paraffin oil, also known as white oil, is the liquid form of paraffin. It is a highly refined, colourless and odourless oil used in different grades of purity and for various applications depending on its viscosity. In cosmetics, it is listed as Paraffinum Liquidum and is used primarily in skincare products, ointments and skin-protection formulations.

Fischer-Tropsch wax (FT wax)

Fischer-Tropsch waxes are not classic paraffin, but they belong to the same chemical group. They are synthetically produced using the Fischer-Tropsch process from synthesis gas, which is often derived from natural gas. FT waxes are among the hardest waxes and are used as additives in a wide range of applications. In the candle industry, they are used to increase melting point and temperature resistance. They are also used in hot-melt adhesives, plastics, rubber, paints, coatings and other technical applications.

Microcrystalline wax

Microcrystalline wax is a speciality wax with a very fine crystal structure. Compared with classic paraffin, it is tougher, more flexible and more adhesive, which is why it is mainly used as an additive in various formulations. Typical applications include cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, food products, candles and industrial products.

Paraffin embedding medium

Paraffin embedding medium is a highly refined speciality wax for histology and pathology. It is used to stabilise tissue samples and prepare them for thin microtome sections. This makes it an essential raw material for microscopic diagnostics.

FAQ

The right choice depends on the type of candle. For pillar candles and taper candles, a higher melting point in the range of around 58 to 60 °C is usually ideal, as it makes the wax harder and helps the candle retain its shape. For scented candles as well as jar and container candles, a lower melting point of around 50 to 56 °C is often more suitable, because the wax should be soft enough in the container to melt evenly right to the edge.
For paraffin, we generally recommend flat wicks. They are woven flat, have no fixed direction and are therefore particularly easy to process. Depending on the type and diameter of the candle, suitable options from our range include wicks from the FLD, STG or TLP series.
Usually not. High-quality paraffin is generally considered a safe raw material for candles. However, the quality of the wax and the correct matching of wick, wax and candle shape are important, as inferior quality or incorrect processing can lead to soot formation and a greater impact on indoor air quality.
For external use, paraffin is generally considered harmless. It is well tolerated, rarely causes allergies and forms a protective film on the skin that can help reduce moisture loss.
Paraffin is controversial in skincare because it does not actively moisturise the skin, but instead mainly forms a protective film. This can make the skin feel soft and smooth without actually supplying it with nutrients. Depending on the application, this effect is entirely desirable, but some people view it critically when used for very long periods or exclusively, as it can make the skin less “breathable”.
Look for terms such as Paraffin, Paraffinum Liquidum, Petrolatum, Microcrystalline Wax or Cera Microcristallina.
A paraffin bath is a heat treatment in which hands or feet are dipped into warm, liquid paraffin. This creates a warming layer that leaves the skin feeling cared for and pleasantly supple.
The warmth can feel soothing and is often used to care for very dry skin. In practice, paraffin baths are also used for tension, joint discomfort or cosmetic applications, as they envelop the skin intensively and can help retain moisture for longer.
Unlike vegetable oils, paraffin oil does not go rancid. With proper storage, it therefore keeps for a very long time and is generally usable for practically an unlimited period.
