Soy Wax

Soy wax is one of the most popular plant-based waxes for candle making and DIY projects. It stands out for its sustainable origin, excellent scent retention and clean, even burn — ideal for modern scented candles and wax melts.

To product overview

What is soy wax?

Soy wax is a plant-based wax made from soy oil. Through hydrogenation, the liquid oil is transformed into a solid, creamy wax. This process creates stable, saturated fatty acids that give the wax its typical structure. The result is a white to cream-coloured, easy-to-work wax with ideal properties for candles and cosmetic applications.

Soy wax for candles

Soy wax is one of the most sought-after waxes for modern candle making because it combines sustainability with high performance. As a plant-based, vegan and biodegradable raw material, it offers a clean, low-soot burn and a pleasantly long burn time. It is especially valued for its ability to bind fragrance oils reliably and release them evenly, which delivers convincing cold and hot fragrance throw. With the right processing, its creamy structure creates a smooth, high-quality surface that is ideal for jar candles and wax melts.

NatureWax (Cargill)

The NatureWax range from Cargill includes high-quality soy waxes for professional candle making. All variants are designed for easy processing, consistent quality and reliable performance. The waxes are free from petroleum-based ingredients and animal-derived substances, and are particularly suitable for scented candles with high demands in appearance, burn behaviour and fragrance release.

Soy Wax in Cosmetics

In cosmetics, soy wax is a proven plant-based alternative to beeswax and is used in a wide range of formulations as a texture agent. It gives products such as lip care, creams or body butters a smooth, stable texture and improves glide on the skin. Thanks to its emollient properties, it supports skincare by helping retain moisture and forming a light, breathable protective film. Its low melting point also makes soy wax ideal for massage candles and solid care products such as body melts.

Soft Soy Wax, Cosmetic Grade

Soft soy wax, cosmetic grade, is a soft, buttery plant wax and is ideal for natural cosmetics. It gives lip care products, creams, balms and body butters a smooth texture and supports a pleasant skin feel. Its plant-based origin makes it a vegan alternative to beeswax and especially popular for DIY formulations.

  • Wax type: soft, plant-based wax
  • INCI: Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil
  • Application: lip care, creams, balms, body butter
  • Property: smooth, firm texture with a pleasant skin feel
  • Special feature: vegan alternative to beeswax

Soy wax is a plant-based, renewable wax with good fragrance retention, a long burn time and comparatively low soot production. It is particularly suitable for scented candles, as the lower melting point allows the fragrance to disperse evenly throughout the room. Soy wax is also a popular vegan alternative to paraffin.
Soy wax should be melted slowly and gently in a bain-marie. It is important not to overheat the wax and to stir only carefully so that no air bubbles form. This helps achieve an even result and a clean candle finish.
Uneven surfaces or small sinkholes are normal with soy wax, as the wax naturally shrinks while cooling. This can occur more often, especially with pure soy waxes. The result can usually be improved considerably by using the correct pouring temperature and allowing the candle to cool slowly.
The ideal pouring temperature depends on the wax and formulation used, but for soy wax it is often in the range of 45 to 55 °C. The manufacturer’s instructions for the specific product are always decisive. A calm room with a consistent temperature also helps to prevent cracks and surface imperfections.
When melting, soy wax should only be heated until it is fully liquid. Excessive temperatures can impair its processing properties and reduce the quality of the finished candle. For this reason, the wax should always be processed carefully and without overheating.
Yes, soy wax can be blended very well with other waxes such as coconut wax or paraffin. This allows properties such as hardness, burn behaviour and fragrance release to be adjusted as required. Soy wax is therefore also very suitable for custom wax blends.
No, soy wax is regarded as a plant-based and comparatively safe raw material. It is derived from soy oil and is a popular alternative to petroleum-based paraffin. When burned, it does not produce the typical residues associated with paraffin, which is why it is often used for natural candles.
Yes, soy wax is particularly well suited to jar candles and other container candles. Depending on the variant, it adheres well to the glass, creates an attractive finish and works well with fragrance oils. For this reason, it is one of the most popular wax types for scented candles.
Soy wax is plant-based and made from renewable raw materials, whereas paraffin is derived from petroleum. It usually burns more slowly and with less soot, which is why it is often preferred for natural-style candles. Paraffin, on the other hand, often offers greater stability and a stronger fragrance throw, so both waxes are used for different purposes depending on the desired result.
For a simple massage candle, a blend of soft soy wax (cosmetic grade), shea butter or cocoa butter and a nourishing plant oil such as almond oil or jojoba oil is suitable. First, gently melt the wax and butter in a bain-marie, then stir in the oil and fragrance the mixture with essential oils if desired. Afterwards, pour the liquid mixture into a heat-resistant container with a wick placed in the centre and allow it to set fully at room temperature.
