Brilliant Black BN Food Coloring Black – E 151
Brilliant Black BN (also known as Brilliant Black PN, Brilliant Black A, Black PN, Food Black 1, Naphthol Black, C.I. Food Black 1, or C.I. 28440), is a synthetic, water-soluble azo dye known for its intense black color and is versatile in food and cosmetics. Our highly concentrated powder (80%) is colorfast, light, heat and acid resistant and can be easily combined with other dyes. The powder form allows for flexible dosing and application. Depending on the concentration, Brilliant Black BN produces intense black to blue-black hues, but can also be used for violet and brown nuances.

Areas of Application
Brilliant Black BN is approved in the EU as food coloring E 151 and is widely used in the food industry. Typical areas of application are sweets such as licorice and chewing gum, cheese, fermented milk products, cream products, ice cream, desserts, flavored and wine-containing beverages, mustard, seasonings, sauces, candied fruits, baked goods, batter, decorations, surimi, fish roe, meat and sausage casings and food supplements. There is no quantity restriction (quantum satis) for certain applications such as edible cheese rinds and sausage casings. For other products, the maximum permitted quantity is between 50 and 500 mg/kg, depending on the application.
In the cosmetics industry, Brilliant Black BN (CI 28440) is used, among other things, to blacken eyeliner, for dark shampoos or in soaps.
Application and Dosage
Brilliant Black BN can be incorporated directly into doughs, beverages or water-based cosmetic preparations. Alternatively, the powder can be diluted in water to form a solution. A 1% solution is sufficient to provide an intense color.

When used in foods, maximum quantities must be observed. There are many factors that can influence the result, such as concentration, acidity and temperature.
