Technical gelatin, bone glue
Bone glue is a carpenter's glue that has been in use for centuries and is made from bones. It is natural glue, non-toxic, environmentally friendly and free of preservatives. It is still used today in restoration and traditional arts and crafts. It is manufactured in the EU and has a jelly strength of approx. 175 Bloom (in 12.5 % solution).
Applications
As a natural adhesive, bone glue is used for surfaces made of paper, cardboard, wood, felt and fabric. Due to its properties, it is preferred in musical instrument making and in the restoration of antique furniture. Bone glue dries glassy and has enormous strength. Due to it's shrinkage when it cools, the parts are pulled together.
Depending on the application, use a 10 to 65 % solution (20 g to 130 g bone glue per 100 ml water). For use, first stir the bone glue into cold water without lumps and allow to swell. After complete swelling, heat the glue in a water bath at approx. 60° C. The glue has a short working time. The glue has a short working time, but this can be increased by using heat sources. After gluing, it requires a pressing time (approx. 30 - 60 minutes), after which the workpiece should rest for 24 hours. If mistakes are made, this is not a problem, all joints are reversible, i.e. with the addition of heat and moisture, a glue joint can be opened again without causing damage. Glue residues should be sealed and stored in a cool place.
