We offer here a Sandarak of best quality for industrial customers in large quantities, as well as for small customers.

The resin is brittle and easily breakable, has a balsamic-resinous smell and a slightly bitter taste. It does not soften when chewed (like mastic), but disintegrates into a sandy powder. It is completely soluble in alcohol, ether, fusel oil and acetone, but only partially soluble in turpentine oil, carbon disulphide, chloroform and petroleum ether. Besides small amounts of essential oil and bitter substances, sandarac consists mainly of resin acids of the group of pimarans and labdans such as communic acid and communol, the latter tending to polymerize, which explains the greater hardness of the resin compared to mastic.

Use of sandarac resin:

Sandarac resin is used for the production of smoking powders, but mainly for wine spirit varnishes and polishes as well as greasy and volatile lacquers. For surface treatment, however, it is always used in combination with elemi, Venetian turpentine (larch resin) or some castor oil, as it provides very hard but too brittle coatings that are subject to crumbling and not particularly shiny. Finely powdered sandarac forms the well-known eraser powder, with which erased areas on paper can be made rewritable.
