Microcrystalline MULTIWAX W-445
Microcrystalline wax is a mineral wax obtained as a by-product of the petroleum refining process. It is obtained during petroleum refining by de-oiling of crude oil. It has branched, long chain and naphthalic hydrocarbons that give it a fine crystalline structure. As the name suggests, it is very fine or microscopic. It is also known as mineral wax, microcrystalline wax, earth wax, paraffin wax (mineral oil based), microwax, petroleum wax or E905. Microcrystalline wax is a purified mixture of solid, saturated, mostly branched chain hydrocarbons. There are different types with melting points between about 60 and 100°C. Microcrystalline wax is lipophilic and therefore insoluble in water. The microcrystalline multi-wax W-445 from Sonneborn is one of the whitest multi-waxes in the world. These products consist of odorless, tasteless and non-polar hydrocarbons with a relatively high melting point of 76.7-82.2 °C
Applications
Compared to paraffin wax, microcrystalline wax is more flexible. It is used as an excipient in personal care products and cosmetics. Their film-forming and hydrophobic (water-repellent) properties promote the formation of shine on the skin (e.g. lipstick). It also serves as a consistency factor in creams and protects the skin from moisture loss. Since the wax is highly purified, it is particularly well tolerated and does not cause skin irritation. The microcrystalline waxes also play an important role in food packaging products, e.g. in the surface treatment of fruits. Furthermore, the wax is suitable for candle making, sealants, sealing and for technical applications (e.g. as a polishing agent). Multiwax W-445 meets the requirements of E 905, the German BfR XXV recommendation for food.
Sonneborn microcrystalline waxes play a crucial role in a variety of applications. They serve as a basis for chewing gum and as a cold-flexible coating for cheese wheels. They are an excellent basis for lipsticks, cold creams and ointments. Sonneborn microcrystalline wax products lubricate, carry pigments and protect against moisture.
