Gum arabic (also gum arabicum) is a plant-based product, more precisely the dried resin from acacia trees. This spray-dried, agglomerated quality comes from the stems and branches of Acacia senegal (Linné) Willdenow or other related African acacia species (Fam. Leguminosae). Gum arabic is a versatile raw material used as a food additive (E 414), in cosmetics (INCI: Acacia Senegal Gum) and for technical applications. The harvested resin originates from the Sahel zone in Africa. Cleaning and further processing take place in Germany.

Food

Gum arabic is approved as a food additive with the E number E 414 and serves as a thickener, emulsifier and stabiliser, particularly in beverage emulsions and in the confectionery sector.

Cosmetics

Gum arabic is known under the INCI name Acacia Senegal Gum and is used as a natural stabiliser, emulsifier and thickener in creams, lotions, make-up and hair spray.

Technical Applications

Gum arabic serves as a binder for colour pigments in watercolour, gouache and tempera paints, for gumming paper (e.g. stamps, envelopes, labels) as well as in niche applications such as leather polish, lithography, printing inks, varnishes and as a film former or coating agent for industrial processes.

What is the difference between gum arabic as spray-dried powder and ground powder?

Important: "Spray-dried" and "ground" describe only the physical form, not the quality.

Spray-dried gum arabic is sprayed as an aqueous solution and dried in a hot air stream. This quality is additionally agglomerated ("instant quality"). It forms a fine, relatively homogeneous powder. Thus, the gum arabic powder dissolves in water more quickly and evenly, ideal for highly concentrated solutions, instant drinks, flavour carriers, etc. Thanks to agglomeration, dust formation is lower and flow properties are better.

Ground or roller-milled gum arabic powder is produced by milling dried lumps without spray-drying. The powder is often dustier and has partially poorer flowability. It also dissolves more slowly, tends to clump more and requires more stirring/swelling time.

In short: Chemically speaking, both variants are the same gum arabic. The main differences lie in fineness, solubility, flow properties and dust formation.
