We show you in our first YouTube tutorial how you can make beautiful Christmas candles yourself with our products. Here you will find the written instructions:
First, make sure you line the work area with a towel or something similar. Prepare everything you need for your candle making:
- Rapseedwax 5761
- BWR wick (we use BWR 4 on a roll)
- Wax color (we use our new colors Fir Green, Brown and Berry)
- Scent (we use Vanilla Nuts)
You will also need:
- Water bath/ simmer pot
- thermometer
- something to stir
- (fine) scales
- candle molds (we use hard plastic molds in the video, but you can also use silicone molds)
1. Melting
First you melt the rapeseedwax in a water bath or simmer pot. For this, heat the wax to 75 to max 85°C. While melting, stir regularly and slowly. Be careful not to heat the wax too quickly or too hot. Also, make sure that no water gets into the liquid wax!
2. Prepare the wicks
While the wax melts, you can prepare the wicks. To do this, cut the BWR wick on a roll and be sure to pay attention to the running direction of the wick! We make a knot at the lower side / the back end of the wick, so that we still know the running direction later. This is important so that the candle can burn properly. You can read all about our wicks here.
To pre-wax the wicks, simply dip the blanks into the liquid wax until no more air bubbles are visible. Then lay the wick straight down and wait a short time until it is dry.
3. Prepare molds
Once the wicks are dry you can prepare the molds. If you use hard plastic molds like we did in our video, place the wick in the center and round the mold halves together with tight rubber bands. If the rubber bands are too loose, the wax will flow out of the mold later. To prevent this from happening at the wick opening, you can tape it off with our adhesive wax plates.
If you are using a silicone mold, simply poke the wick through the mold with a sewing needle.
You can now place the molds on a heater to preheat them until you are ready to pour.
4. Add color
For coloring we used our new wax colors and weighed out the recommended addition of 0.3%.
We made three different candles, so we colored the wax in extra containers. It is important to make sure that the wax has a temperature of about 80°C so that the color can really dissolve completely. If the wax in the extra container is too cold, simply put it again (briefly!) into the microwave and mix it completely.
4.1 Add scent
If you want to add scent to your candle, first color the wax and then stir your desired scent (max. 6%) completely in the liquid wax at about 80°C (about 3 minutes). We used our Vanilla Nuts scent for our reindeer candle.
Important: Always color the wax first before adding fragrance. A little trial and error is required when coloring to achieve the desired color result. The color becomes less intense as the wax cools.
Caution: Some ingredients of fragrance oils may react with the crystallization of natural waxes.
5. Pouring
Slowly reduce the temperature to approx. 60-65°C. Here it is best to use a thermometer for control. The environment and molds should not be too cold and the wax should not be too hot.
Do not pour the wax too quickly. It is easy to get rid of air bubbles by tapping the mold lightly on the base in between. To stabilize the wicks as they cool, center them with a wick holder (you can also use a fork, toothpick, bobby pin,...).
6. Refill
If small cracks or bumps form, add a thin layer of wax shortly after curing.
7. Let cool
Allow the candles to cure for 12 hours at room temperature. It is best to place them on a cooling grid with sufficient distance between them. Rapeseedwax candles are usually hardened after a few hours, unlike paraffin candles. However, we recommend waiting a little longer.
8. Demolding
When the candles have cooled down completely, carefully remove them from the mold. You can smooth the bottom of the candle with a soap plane.
9. Give away or light
With the homemade Christmas candles, it's super easy to please others or you can light them for yourself for your own enjoyment. As decorations, they make a great natural even if you don't like lighting them! (:
If you have used fragrance and wax is still left, you can make super good fragrance melts - for this, simply pour the leftover wax into small molds (eg praline molds).
