Carnauba Wax

Natural hard wax for cosmetics, foodstuffs, polishes and technical applications

Go to product range

What is carnauba wax?

Carnauba wax is the hardest naturally occurring wax and is obtained from the leaves of the Brazilian carnauba palm. It is valued for its high hardness, gloss, heat resistance and versatile uses in cosmetics, food, polishes and technical formulations. Depending on grade and processing, it is suitable for different requirements in terms of appearance, handling and function.

What qualities are available?

We offer carnauba wax in the grades T1, T3 and T4. These differ according to the extraction method, purity, colour and area of application. The standard form supplied is flakes, and the product is also available in powder form on request. Depending on the intended use, this can offer practical advantages during processing. Here is an overview of our products:

Type Colour Extraction Properties Applications
Organic T1 Prime Yellow / Primagelb Unopened, young leaves Highest purity and certified organic quality Food and cosmetics
T1 Prime Yellow / Primagelb Unopened, young leaves Highest purity Food (25 kg only) and cosmetics
T3 Light Fat Grey / Hellfettgrau Outer leaves after weather exposure Medium purity Cosmetics and industrial applications
T4 Fat Grey / Fettgrau Outer leaves after weather exposure Fewer processing steps, more natural Industrial applications

T1 Prime Yellow

A particularly light and pure quality made from young leaves, ideal for demanding applications with high requirements in terms of appearance and purity. The organic quality is processed in compliance with EU organic requirements and therefore undergoes a slightly different filtration process. As a result, the colour appears slightly darker. It is ideal for anyone who values ecological sustainability and organic quality.

T3 Light Fat Grey

Carnauba wax T3 offers a balanced quality with good purity and versatile possible applications. Like T4, it is obtained from older, weather-exposed leaves, but is purified to a greater extent. This makes it especially suitable for cosmetic and industrial applications.

History and production

Carnauba wax is obtained from the leaves of the Brazilian carnauba palm „Copernicia prunifera“ and is also known as Brazilian wax or ceara wax. The palm grows only in certain regions of north-eastern Brazil, especially in the states of Ceará, Piauí and parts of Paraíba. Harvesting takes place once a year during the dry season. Only individual leaves are removed, allowing the palm to continue growing and remain a source of raw material for many years. The detached raw wax is then collected, melted and filtered in order to be further processed into a pure natural wax. Different qualities are produced depending on the time of harvest and the processing steps. Particularly light and pure carnauba wax is obtained from young, closed leaves, while darker qualities come from older, more developed leaves.

FAQ

Yes, carnauba wax is a purely plant-based raw material and is therefore suitable for vegan formulations.
Carnauba wax is used in a wide range of applications, especially where hardness, gloss and durability are required. Typical applications include cosmetic products such as lip care products, creams or sticks, food products as a glazing and coating agent, polishes and wax blends, as well as technical formulations for surface care and protective applications.
Yes, carnauba wax is used in the food industry as the additive E 903, primarily as a glazing and coating agent. It is used, among other things, on confectionery, dragées or fruit when a protective surface or an even gloss is desired.
Carnauba wax is regarded as a safe plant-based raw material. It is non-toxic, skin-friendly and non-comedogenic, meaning it does not block the pores. Carnauba wax is approved as the food additive E 903 and is used in small quantities as a coating or glazing agent. As the plant-based substance is not digested by the body, it is excreted unchanged.
Carnauba wax is very well suited to firm to semi-firm pastes and creams with a protective, gloss-enhancing effect. Because it is naturally very hard, it is usually combined in practice with softer components to create a spreadable texture. A typical formulation combines carnauba wax for hardness and gloss, oils for smoothness and care, and, depending on the recipe, other auxiliaries to improve processing. For stable formulations, the correct temperature control during melting and mixing is also important.
Carnauba wax emulsions are finely dispersed wax systems in water, usually formulated as oil-in-water emulsions. They are particularly suitable for liquid, easy-to-apply products such as spray waxes for cars or wood and generally dry faster than pure pastes. A stable emulsion requires carnauba wax, water, a suitable emulsifier and sufficient heat and mechanical shear during production. It is crucial that the wax is fully melted and that the emulsion is stabilised evenly during cooling.
