Collagen Powder, Collagen Hydrolysate
Collagen is a naturally occurring structural protein and an important component of the connective tissue of humans and animals. It is found in the skin, bones, cartilage, tendons and ligaments, among other tissues. In the human body, collagen accounts for approximately 25 to 30% of the total protein mass. Our collagen hydrolysate is derived from pork. During a hydrolysis process, the original collagen is broken down into smaller peptides. This produces a fine, highly soluble powder that can be used in a range of food, food supplement and cosmetic formulations.
Collagen hydrolysate is also referred to as hydrolysed collagen or collagen peptide and mainly contains type 1 peptides, along with small amounts of types 2 and 3. It is an animal-derived raw material and is therefore not suitable for vegans or vegetarians.
What is collagen hydrolysate?
Collagen hydrolysate is made from animal collagen. During hydrolysis, the long protein structures are broken down into shorter peptide chains. The result is a water-soluble collagen powder that is easy to dose and process.
Use as a food supplement
Collagen hydrolysate is frequently used as a food supplement or as an ingredient in food supplements. The powder can easily be stirred into water, juices, shakes, smoothies, coffee or other suitable foods and drinks.
Recommended intake: Stir 2 tablespoons of collagen powder (20 g) into water, juices, shakes, smoothies or coffee and consume daily.
Collagen hydrolysate in food production
Collagen hydrolysate can be used as a protein-based food ingredient in a variety of formulations. Depending on the application, it can contribute to increasing the protein content and to adjusting the texture and mouthfeel.
Possible applications include:
- Meat products and sausages
- Minced meat products
- Soups and broths
- Savoury ready meals
- Protein blends and powdered drinks
Use in cosmetics
Collagen hydrolysate can also be used as a cosmetic raw material in formulations for skin and hair. It is listed under the INCI name Hydrolyzed Collagen. In hair care products, hydrolysed collagen can, among other things, influence the conditioning feel, combability and shine. In skincare formulations, it is primarily used for its moisture-binding and film-forming properties.
