Benzoic acid
We offer high-quality, pure benzoic acid. This raw material is chemically speaking an aromatic carboxylic acid. It consists of the phenyl radical with a carboxy group. Salts and esters of benzoic acid are called benzoates. The best known benzoate is sodium benzoate. The benzoic acid offered here is a technically pure product with a content of at least 99.9%.
Properties of Benzoic acid:
Benzoic acid is colourless in its solid form and forms shiny flakes or needle-shaped crystals. This crystalline powder appears white. Benzoic acid is only slightly soluble in cold water, but is highly soluble in warm water. The acid also dissolves well in ethyl alcohol, diethyl ether and acetone. This simple and aromatic carboxylic acid is a stronger acid than the widely known acetic acid. The acid has a strong bactericidal and fungicidal effect. It sublimates from 100 °C with the release of mucosa-irritating vapours. It is relatively stable in air. Benzoic acid has a typical, strong smell. During the heating process, benzoic acid decomposes into benzene and carbon dioxide only above the 370 °C limit.
- Boiling point: 250 °C
- Melting point: 122,3 °C
- Density: 1,62 g/cm3
- Vapour pressure: 0,001 hPa (20 °C)
- Solubility: slightly soluble in water (2,9 g/l at 25 °C), very slightly soluble in methanol, ethanol and acetone (>500 g/l)
Use of benzoic acid:
Benzoic acid is mainly used to produce benzoic acid esters for the perfume industry and for plasticizers. Besides these major applications, benzoic acid is also used in adhesives, cosmetics and medicine. Furthermore, benzoic acid is also suitable as a preservative with the label E210 for food preservation according to the legal maximum quantity restrictions. However, only the correspondingly tested food-compliant goods are permitted.
