Potassium Sorbate (E202) – Versatile Preservative for Food, Cosmetics and Beverages
Potassium sorbate is a proven preservative that inhibits the growth of yeasts, moulds and certain bacteria. As a food additive (E202), it extends the shelf life of products without affecting their taste or appearance. Our potassium sorbate meets the purity requirements of Regulation (EU) No. 231/2012 and is approved for use in food. The granules are readily water-soluble, virtually tasteless, vegan and highly versatile – from food production to cosmetic manufacturing. Halal and kosher certification applies only to the 25 kg packs.
Applications
Potassium sorbate is a sought-after additive in many industries:
- Food industry: Whether in cheese, yoghurt, baked goods, fruit preparations or sauces – this additive reliably protects your products from microbial spoilage and ensures a longer shelf life.
- Beverage and wine production: It is used in drinks and, in particular, in winemaking to prevent secondary fermentation. Especially in sweet wines, preservative E202 helps prevent unwanted carbon dioxide formation and stabilises the residual sugar content.
- Cosmetics and personal care: Also used in creams, lotions and shampoos to extend shelf life and protect against microbial contamination.
- Preserving fishing bait: Potassium sorbate is a proven preservative in angling and is primarily used to significantly extend the shelf life of boilies and other types of bait. The recommended dosage typically ranges from 1% to 5% of the total mass, with around 1.5% of the dry mix proving effective for boilies. Using potassium sorbate keeps bait fresh and resistant to mould for longer – without the need for harsh chemicals or complex storage conditions.
Use and Dosage
The usual dosage of potassium sorbate in food processing is around 0.1% to 0.3%, depending on the product and desired shelf life. In winemaking, the typical dosage is around 100 to 200 mg per litre. In cosmetic products, potassium sorbate is used at concentrations of approximately 0.1% to 0.2%.
It is important to ensure that the specific legal maximum levels for the relevant end product are observed. Potassium sorbate is often combined with other preservatives such as citric acid to adjust the pH to the effective acidic range, as its antimicrobial action is most effective at pH values below 5.
Properties and Benefits
Potassium sorbate offers numerous advantages – its effects are particularly evident in prolonging shelf life and protecting against microbial spoilage:
- Reliable protection against yeasts, moulds and bacteria
- Virtually tasteless – ideal for sensitive formulations
- Vegan and synthetically produced
- Versatile use in food, beverages, wine and cosmetics
Storage Information
Potassium sorbate should be stored in a cool, dry and dark place.
