Sodium Bicarbonate E500(ii) – Food Grade Baking Soda Powder
Our fine Sodium Bicarbonate – also known as Baking Soda, Bicarbonate of Soda, or Cooking Soda – is a white, odourless powder with a mildly alkaline effect. As the sodium salt of carbonic acid (NaHCO₃), it belongs to the group of hydrogen carbonates, is easily soluble in water, and is used as a food additive under the designation E500(ii). It is characterised by its high purity, versatile applications, and gentle pH-regulating properties – ideal for use in food, cosmetics, household, and technical applications.
Our Baking Soda Powder is:
- 100% pure – free from additives, anti-caking agents, or carriers
- Finely ground – for even dosing and excellent solubility
- Universally applicable – suitable for kitchen, cosmetics, household, or industrial processes
What is Baking Soda Used For?
Baking Soda is used in a wide range of areas, including:
- Food: As a leavening agent for doughs, acidity regulator, separating agent, and colour stabiliser – for example in baked goods, cocoa products, or effervescent powders. It is also used in niche applications such as loosening cheese fondues or reducing acidity in jams.
- Beverages & Supplements: For pH regulation in isotonic drinks, tablets, or powder blends – for example, to create fizz in effervescent drinks.
- Household: A proven household remedy for descaling, neutralising odours, and cleaning surfaces or drains.
- Cosmetics & Personal Care: Found in deodorants, tooth powders, bath additives, and scrubs – mildly alkaline and cleansing in effect.
- Technology & Industry: Used in water treatment, agriculture, aquatics, or laboratory processes.
The Difference Between Baking Soda and Soda Crystals
Although they are often confused, Baking Soda (Sodium Bicarbonate) and Soda (Sodium Carbonate) differ chemically and in their applications.
- Baking Soda is milder in effect and suitable for food and personal care uses. It serves as a leavening agent, pH regulator, or household remedy.
- Soda Crystals, on the other hand, are more strongly alkaline, significantly more caustic, and primarily used as a cleaning agent (e.g. washing soda) or for water softening. They are not suitable for consumption and should not be confused with Baking Soda.
Notes
Sodium hydrogen carbonate clumps quickly due to its properties, but can be dissolved again by applying slight force. The product should be stored clean, in closed packaging, at a humidity of 30 - 70 % and at a temperature of no more than 35 °C.
