Dammar is a light, yellowish, slightly splintering tree resin from South East Asia with a smooth break. It can also take on a black-grey colour (Sumatra-Dammar). Dammar has a fine lemony and light scent. The resin is somewhat harder than balsamic resin (colophony) and is only partially soluble in alcohol and ether. In contrast, dammar resin is highly soluble in turpentine oil, chloroform, carbon disulphide or petroleum ether.

Dammar resin or dammar is the resin of Malaysian-Indian deciduous trees. These grow mainly on the Sunda Islands. There are different species of these trees, of which the tree Shorea wiesneri (Shorea) is considered the most important source.

The name of this resin comes from Malay and means resin or torch. Other names are: Canarium strictum, Canarium prostatum Schiffn, cat's eye resin, Shorea wiesneri Schiffn.

Use of dammar resin:

• for the production of light-coloured varnishes, enamel varnishes, maple varnishes
• as additives for tempera and oil-resin paints
• as a substrate for obtaining dammardienol (inclusion agent for microscopic preparations and for the production of plasters)
• dissolved in turpentine oil, processed to dammar varnish, used in oil painting to isolate the painting ground and as intermediate and final varnish
• as incense
